The Draft "Expert" - Wk 6 Quarterback Prospect Rankings

We are back yet again to bring you another Draft "Expert" list! Once again, unsurprisingly, it's another quarterback list! YAY!

Though we do these every week, I think this week has seen the most changes. Whether that be a quarterback losing a tough game, a quarterback getting injured, or a quarterback playing pretty bad and getting benched, there's a lot of parade between this weeks list and last weeks.

Will Malik Willis still be number one after throwing three picks against Middle Tennessee State? Will we see some new faces in the top five? Will JT Daniels and Spencer Rattler even be on the list? Well, read through this weeks Draft "Expert" quarterback prospect rankings to find out!

Pictured: Matt Corral, Ole Miss/Spencer Rattler, Oklahoma/Desmond Ridder, Cincinnati

1. Malik Wills, Liberty

Wk 5 - 17/30 222 yds 2 touchdowns 3 interceptions/16 carries 80 yds 1 touchdown v Middle Tennessee State (41-13 W)

Season - 93/137 1,327 yds 13 touchdowns 3 interceptions/82 carries 498 yds 7 touchdowns

  • Well, it finally happened. Malik Willis threw his first interception of the season, in the first quarter against Middle Tennessee State. He threw a further two after that to finish the game with three interceptions to only two touchdowns, which is the first time Willis has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns since Liberty's bowl game win against Coastal Carolina, a game where Willis rushed for 137 yards and four touchdowns. So, after a three interception game, will Willis be dropping down the rankings? Well, if you can read, obviously not. To me, he's still the number one quarterback in this class. There were many moments throughout the game on Saturday that left you speechless, doing things no one else in college football can do, which is what makes him so very special. Just look at the two point conversion Liberty converted in the third quarter, there's only one quarterback who can do what he did on that play, and that's the man himself. Willis is truly a special quarterback and is still my number one quarterback for the 2022 draft.

2. Matt Corral, Ole Miss

Wk 5 - 14/21 287 yds 2 touchdowns 0 interceptions/15 carries 94 yds 2 touchdowns v no.13 Arkansas (52-51 W)

Season - 101/146 1,497 yds 12 touchdowns 0 interceptions/58 carries 255 yds 8 touchdowns

  • Matt Corral had a very nice all around game against Arkansas on Saturday. Posting well over 200 yards passing along with almost 100 yards rushing, 94 to be exact, which is the second most rushing yards Carrol has had in a game since he ran for 158 yards against LSU last season. Not only did he rush for 94 yards, he took a flying knee to the head during one of his two rushing touchdowns, which is not important to his draft stock, I just thought it was pretty funny/ridiculous. All in all, once again, Corral played a very nice game and I, along with most people I'd assume, believe Corral is a top two quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft, I just don't think he's number one, yet. If he keeps playing like he has been, he will have a good case not only to be the number one quarterback in the draft, but the Heisman Trophy winner as well.

3. Desmond Ridder, Cincinnati (+2)

Wk 5 - 22/30 259 yds 3 touchdowns 0 interceptions/3 carries 6 yds 0 touchdowns v Temple (52-3 W)

Season - 95/145 1,304 yds 12 touchdowns 2 interceptions/33 carries 104 yds 3 touchdowns

  • If you've listened to my show for long enough, you'd know that I am really fond of Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder, and he put together a really nice game against Temple on Friday, which wasn't too surprising, as Temple isn't one of the powerhouses in America. That being said, you still have to perform, and Ridder and Cincinnati did that on Friday, blitzing Temple for 542 total yards of offense. I think Ridder's size and athletic ability make him a very fun quarterback to watch, but also one of the best in the country. With Cincinnati brushing past every challenge they've faced this season, they may have an actual shot at the College Football Playoff with Ridder maybe having a realistic shot at the Heisman Trophy, which I am 100% down for. For this week though, they're taking on a UCF team that a decent amount of yards and points, so we should see another nice performance from Ridder and co. on Saturday.

4. Carson Strong, Nevada (+2)

Wk 5 - 25/32 377 yds 6 touchdowns 1 interception/2 carries -11 yds 0 touchdowns v New Mexico State (55-28 W)

Season - 133/192 1,595 yds 14 touchdowns 3 interceptions/16 carries -48 yds 0 touchdowns

  • As predicted, Carson Strong put together a very nice performance against a bad New Mexico State defense, tossing almost 400 yards with six touchdowns through the air. And after five weeks of being stuck at number six, he has made his way up to number four in the rankings, and it's well deserved, especially if you look at some of the other performances from this past weekend. Like I said last week, I was waiting for that big time performance from Carson Strong that was expected from him this season, we just hadn't seen it yet. This week, it finally happened, and I couldn't be happier. Like we've talked about before, the Mountain West Conference is pretty tough this season and against a Hawaii team that made Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener's life pretty miserable, causing him to throw four interceptions, I don't want Strong and co. to overlook a pretty tough Rainbow Warriors pass defense. All in all though, welcome back to the top five Carson Strong!

5. Sam Howell, North Carolina (-1)

Wk 5 - 17/32 203 yds 2 touchdowns 1 interception/11 carries 108 yds 0 touchdowns v Florida State (35-25 L)

Season - 112/185 1,697 yds 16 touchdowns 5 interceptions/79 carries 396 yds 3 touchdowns

  • I get North Carolina haven't been at their best this season, but seriously, Florida State? A team that lost to Jacksonville State at home and lost to a Wake Forrest team by 21 in their only other road game before this weekend. Really? And to cap it off, losing by 10? Really? I don't really know what's going on over in Chapel Hill, like, I knew the start of the season would need a little learning curve due to them losing their four top weapons from the season before but I didn't think they'd get beat by double digits by Georgia Tech AND Florida State. Craziness. Regardless, Sam Howell is putting up pretty decent numbers in both the passing and running game this season, posting 100+ yards rushing for the third time this season. I think Howell is a very talented quarterback, but with yet another double digit loss at home, he has to drop down a spot on this list.

6. Kenny Pickett, Pitt (+1)

Wk 5 - BYE

Season - 121/168 1,731 yds 19 touchdowns 1 interception/36 carries 142 yds 2 touchdowns

  • Didn't play this week, but has had a very nice year up until this point. Hopefully it continues on the road against Virginia Tech.

7. Jayden Daniels, Arizona State (+2)

Wk 5 - 14/23 175 yds 0 touchdowns 0 interceptions/13 carries 76 yds 1 touchdown v Stanford (28-10 W)

Season - 96/137 1,269 yds 4 touchdowns 3 interceptions/55 carries 369 yds 3 touchdowns

  • I don't know what it is, but Jayden Daniels, weirdly, is having a pretty hard time finding the end zone through the air this season, with him only throwing touchdowns in two of the six games ASU has played this season. Though he's not finding the end zone with a ton of ease, he has shown improvements as a passer, in regards to accuracy, and has shown his ability as an athlete, rushing for 75+ yards in three games and 40+ yards in two other games. He's a very fun quarterback to watch and will have another tough test on his hands as he and the Sun Devils take on Utah in Salt Lake City.

8. Dorian Thompson-Robinson, UCLA

Wk 5 - 8/19 82 yds 1 touchdown 1 interception/6 carries 28 yds 2 touchdowns @ Arizona (34-16 W)

Season - 80/140 1,236 yds 11 touchdowns 2 interceptions/70 carries 242 yds 4 touchdowns

  • For how bad Arizona has been this season, I think most people out there would consider DTR's passing performance on Saturday as a little bit of a let down. Though his numbers weren't the greatest, to his defense, he didn't really need to do a whole lot on Saturday, as UCLA just ran the ball down Arizona's throat for 329 yards, with two players rushing for well over 100 yards. Also, to DTR's credit, he chipped in with two rushing touchdowns, putting together some long drives while doing it. Thompson-Robinson may not be completing passes at an insanely high competition percentage, but he's one passing touchdown away from passing his total from last season, 12, along with being only 64 yards behind his career high in rushing yards (306). I think DTR is uber talented but will have a tough road match-up against a good Washington defense that has the third best passing defense and has only allowed two touchdowns this season. We may see yet another run heavy performance from the Bruins as the Huskies give up around 180 yards a game on the ground.

9. Spencer Rattler, Oklahoma (-6)

Wk 5 - 8/15 111 yds 0 touchdowns 1 interception/5 carries -9 yds 1 touchdown @ no.21 Texas (55-48 W) (BENCHED)

Season - 130/175 1,371 yds 10 touchdowns 5 interceptions/40 carries 86 yds 3 touchdowns

  • Spencer Rattler's time as Oklahoma's starter seems like it has come to an end, as he was benched, yet again, against Texas on Saturday in favor of freshman Caleb Williams, who led an insane comeback against the Longhorns in Dallas, winning 55-48. So, with his starting job in jeopardy, how is he still listed in this top 10? Well, to be honest, though he is probably losing his starting job, I'd still take him over the other quarterbacks below him on this list. That being said, I do think there is a better chance Rattler enters the transfer portal rather than the 2022 NFL Draft, mostly because of the fact most NFL teams don't draft backup quarterbacks, not saying it's impossible, but it doesn't happen often (if ever). Rattler has all the talent in the world, but it just hasn't come together for him this season. I don't know if it was the hype pre-season that has effected his play or what, all I know is he hasn't played well. I do hope he gets it together at some point, whether it be at Oklahoma or somewhere else, just hate to see his talent go to waste.

10. Tanner McKee, Stanford (NEW)

Wk 5 - 27/45 356 yds 1 touchdown 3 interceptions/6 carries -32 yds 0 touchdowns @ no.22 Arizona State (28-10 L)

Season - 116/183 1,449 yds 12 touchdowns 3 interceptions/35 carries 39 yds 2 touchdowns

  • I would like to make this note before I get into the reasoning behind McKee's placement on this list, this is not a result of his play against Arizona State, it is based on his season as a whole. I understand that it is pretty weird timing to place him in the top 10 but with JT Daniels still not playing and with McKee being my number 11 quarterback last week, he, by default, gets placed in the top 10. Now, with that out of the way, McKee did not cover himself in glory against Arizona State on Friday. That being said, to give him the benefit of the doubt, ASU does have a really solid pass defense, which has seen them have more interceptions (8) than touchdowns allowed this season (5). Also, before this game, McKee hadn't thrown a single interception all season, tossing 11 touchdowns and zero picks before this game, putting together some very nice performances against three top 25 teams before this week, winning two of them (at the time they played them). I think McKee is a very nice quarterback and both he and Stanford as a whole should have a nice bounce back week against Washington State on Saturday.
