The Draft "Expert" - Wk 5 Quarterback Prospect Rankings

Welcome back one and all to yet another Draft "Expert" prospect rankings list! No, this isn't a full prospect list, yet, but it is another quarterback list by your favorite quarterback scout, the Draft "Expert," me, Logan Blackman.

Unlike last week, every quarterback in the top 10 was in action, with some playing better football than others.

Will Desmond Ridder be on the rise after Cincinnati's historic win at Notre Dame? Can Georgia quarterback JT Daniels just stay healthy? How will Corral's stock change after getting beat up against Alabama? All will be revealed in this weeks Quarterback Prospect Rankings list!

Pictured: Desmond Ridder, Cincinnati/JT Daniels, Georgia/Matt Corral, Ole Miss

1. Malik Willis, Liberty

Wk 5 - 13/19 287 yds 1 touchdown 0 interception/15 carries 144 yds 2 touchdowns @ UAB (36-12 W)

Season - 76/107 1,105 yds 11 touchdowns 0 interceptions/66 carries 418 yds 6 touchdowns

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again, Malik Willis is truly a special talent at the quarterback position, and that talent was on full display on the road against a UAB team that was favored to win. After a pretty dry first half, scoring wise, the Flames offense lit up the Blazers for 33 second half points, with Willis scoring the first ever touchdown at UAB's new stadium. Again, Willis is a special quarterback and is finally starting to get talked about as the draft's top quarterback. What a performance by Willis this past weekend. No one, and I mean no one, in this draft class can do the things Willis can with the ball in his hands.

  • Pre-Season - 3*

  • Wk 1 - 2

  • Wk 2 - 2

  • Wk 3 - 1

  • Wk 4 - 1

  • Wk 5 - 1

  • Wk 6 - v Middle Tennessee State

2. Matt Corral, Ole Miss (+1)

Wk 5 - 21/29 213 yds 1 touchdown 0 interceptions/10 carries 3 yds 1 touchdown @ no.1 Alabama (42-21 L)

Season - 87/125 1,210 yds 10 touchdowns 0 interceptions/43 carries 161 yds 6 touchdowns

  • Yes, Matt Corral is coming off a bad loss against the nation's number one team, Alabama, but he should receive little to no blame for that loss. Apart from Ole Miss' first drive of the game, Corral got beat up against Alabama's defense. Ole Miss' o-line did very little in attempting to stop Bama's pass rush, and the Rebels offense suffered for it. For a team that averages 240+ yards rushing a game, they had a measly 78. With no run game, this made Ole Miss' offense incredibly one dimensional. With no pass blocking, this left their already one dimensional offense unable to do anything of note. That being said, I do think Corral has done enough (not just through this week) to move up a spot in the rankings. This week though will be another tough test as Ole Miss will be taking on a hopefully motivated Arkansas team. I think this'll be a nice bounce back week against a good team for Corral and co.

  • Pre-Season - 8*

  • Wk 1 - 6

  • Wk 2 - 5

  • Wk 3 - 4

  • Wk 4 - 3

  • Wk 5 - 2

  • Wk 6 - v no.13 Arkansas

3. Spencer Rattler, Oklahoma (-1)

Wk 5 - 22/25 243 yds 2 touchdowns 1 interception/8 carries 24 yds 0 touchdowns @ Kansas State (37-31 W)

Season - 122/160 1,260 yds 10 touchdowns 4 interceptions/35 carries 95 yds 2 touchdowns

  • Spencer Rattler is at a very weird place right now in the eyes of the fans. Before the season started, Rattler was the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and the odds on favorite to be the number one quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft. Right now, neither seems likely, to the point where fans are posing the question, "is Rattler bad?" Which the simple answer is, no, he's not, he's just in a weird run of form right now. That being said, it's not like OU are playing a murderers row of teams, with four of their five games being played at home and facing only one team with a winning record (Kansas State). I fully expect Rattler to return to being one of the top QBs in the country but for now, based off recent play, I have to move him down one spot in the rankings. This week against Texas will be big for both Rattler and Oklahoma as a team.

  • Pre-Season - 1*

  • Wk 1 - 1

  • Wk 2 - 1

  • Wk 3 - 2

  • Wk 4 - 2

  • Wk 5 - 3

  • Wk 6 - @ no.21 Texas (Dallas)

4. Sam Howell, North Carolina

Wk 5 - 18/32 321 yds 3 touchdowns 0 interceptions/13 carries 29 yds 0 touchdowns v Duke (38-7 W)

Season - 95/153 1,494 yds 14 touchdowns 4 interceptions/68 carries 288 yds 3 touchdowns

  • Sam Howell had a nice little bounce back game this weekend against Duke after a pretty poor performance against Georgia Tech. This game, Howell threw for three touchdowns and didn't turn the ball over once, which is better than his three fumbles he had against Georgia Tech the week prior. It was nice to see Howell bounce back, even if it was against a Duke team who lost to Charlotte week one, who lost to one win Georgia State, a team UNC beat 59-17. All in all, a team North Carolina should easily beat, and they did. This week, against Florida State, I expect Howell to put together a nice performance against a team who just got their first win of the season.

  • Pre-Season - 2*

  • Wk 1 - 4

  • Wk 2 - 3

  • Wk 3 - 3

  • Wk 4 - 4

  • Wk 5 - 4

  • Wk 6 - v Florida State

5. Desmond Ridder, Cincinnati

Wk 5 - 19/32 297 yds 2 touchdowns 0 interceptions/10 carries 26 yds 1 touchdown @ no.9 Notre Dame (24-13 W)

Season - 73/115 1,045 yds 9 touchdowns 2 interceptions/30 carries 98 yds 3 touchdowns

  • Desmond Ridder and Cincinnati are coming off the biggest win in school history. Defeating the then ninth ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the road by double digits. Though the entire team played well against Notre Dame, Ridder was undoubtedly the best player on the field, putting together an impressive stat line and not turning the ball over against a team that's third in the nation in interceptions (9). For Ridder and co., this was a big coming out party, letting people know that Cincinnati are a legit football team and that Desmond Ridder is a legit quarterback. Yes Cincinnati beat Indiana on the road but this win was big for Cincy's Playoff hopes. This week against Temple, back at home for the first time since Sept. 11th, I fully expect Ridder to put together another very nice performance and further stake his claim as one of the top quarterbacks in next year's draft.

  • Pre-Season - 4*

  • Wk 1 - 3

  • Wk 2 - 4

  • Wk 3 - 5

  • Wk 4 - 5

  • Wk 5 - 5

  • Wk 6 - v Temple

6. Carson Strong, Nevada

Wk 5 - 25/38 263 yds 1 touchdown 0 interceptions/5 carries -20 yds 0 touchdowns @ Boise State (41-31 W)

Season - 108/160 1,218 yds 8 touchdowns 2 interceptions/14 carries -37 yds 0 touchdowns

  • Nevada is coming off a very impressive win on the road against Boise State. Though they put up 41 points against the Broncos, their stud quarterback ultimately did very little, throwing for 263 yards and only one touchdown, with Nevada's rushing attack being the main source of their success on Saturday. For a quarterback who's getting talked about as a potential top pick, Strong has thrown the least amount of touchdowns out of anyone in my top five, one behind Desmond Ridder. In his past two games, granted on the road, he has only thrown two touchdown passes. This weekend, I expect Strong to put together a strong performance against a New Mexico State team who have given up 12 pass touchdowns this season, good for joint sixth worst in the country.

  • Pre-Season - 5*

  • Wk 1 - 6

  • Wk 2 - 6

  • Wk 3 - 6

  • Wk 4 - 6

  • Wk 5 - 6

  • Wk 6 - v New Mexico State

7. Kenny Pickett, Pitt (+2)

Wk 5 - 23/36 389 yds 4 touchdowns 0 interceptions/6 carries 21 yds 0 touchdowns @ Georgia Tech (52-21 W)

Season - 121/168 1,731 yds 19 touchdowns 1 interception/36 carries 142 yds 2 touchdowns

  • Kenny Pickett has had a pretty insane season so far. Throwing for 19 touchdowns, more than anyone on this list, while also throwing only one interception. He has also completed a high percentage of passes and has thrown for four plus touchdowns in his past three games. All in all, he's just had a great year so far at Pitt, setting a new career high in passing touchdowns through just five games, pretty damn impressive. This week especially, against Georgia Tech, a team that gave pre-season number two quarterback Sam Howell and pre-season Heisman hopeful DJ U a lot of problems, Pickett played very well, with him and Pitt blitzing the Yellow Jackets for 52 points and no turnovers. Pickett's stock is only going to keep rising if he keeps this level of play up. We'll have to wait a week though to see him back in action, as Pitt are on a bye.

  • Pre-Season - 16*

  • Wk 1 - N/R

  • Wk 2 - N/R

  • Wk 3 - 9

  • Wk 4 - 9

  • Wk 5 - 7

  • Wk 6 - BYE

8. Dorian Thompson-Robinson, UCLA (-1)

Wk 5 - 21/32 235 yds 1 touchdown 0 interceptions/19 carries 96 yds 0 touchdowns v Arizona State (42-23 L)

Season - 72/121 1,154 yds 10 touchdowns 1 interception/64 carries 214 yds 2 touchdowns

  • After one half against Arizona State, DTR and UCLA were looking at a one point deficit, down 24-23. After seeing what would transpire as the game went on, I'm pretty sure they would've taken a 24-23 loss, as opposed to have ASU score 18 unanswered and beat them 42-23 at the Rose Bowl. Though UCLA lost bad, DTR still put together a nice performance against a very solid Arizona State defense. He showed off his abilities both in the pass game and the run game, posting over 300 yards of total offense and no turnovers. I expect UCLA to bounce back this week though against a terrible Arizona team and believe DTR will put together a nice game against the Wildcats.

  • Pre-Season - 13*

  • Wk 1 - H/M

  • Wk 2 - 10

  • Wk 3 - 7

  • Wk 4 - 7

  • Wk 5 - 8

  • Wk 6 - @ Arizona

9. Jayden Daniels, Arizona State (+1)

Wk 5 - 13/19 286 yds 2 touchdowns 0 interceptions/6 carries 45 yds 0 touchdowns @ no.20 UCLA (42-23 W)

Season - 82/114 1,094 4 touchdowns 3 interceptions/42 carries 293 yds 2 touchdowns

  • What a game for the Sun Devils in LA on Saturday. Not only did they get a big double digit dub against a top 20 team, but Jayden Daniels threw his first touchdown pass in two weeks, throwing two against a bad Bruins pass defense (last touchdown(s) before came against UNLV on Sept. 11th). Overall, this was a very nice game for ASU, and is a nice test prior to their match-up against a tough Stanford team that just knocked off the third ranked team in the nation. This game will be a fun one to watch.

  • Pre-Season - 9*

  • Wk 1 - 10

  • Wk 2 - 7

  • Wk 3 - 10

  • Wk 4 - 10

  • Wk 5 - 9

  • Wk 6 - v Stanford

10. JT Daniels, Georgia (-2)

Wk 5 - OUT (back) v no.8 Arkansas (37-0 W)

Season - 54/71 567 yds 5 touchdowns 2 interceptions/3 carries -15 yds 0 touchdowns

  • I know I said this on the graphic but seriously, can JT Daniels stay healthy? If you've listened to my show long enough you would know that one of the biggest abilities in football is availability, which Daniels never seems to have. Even before the game against Arkansas, the announcers were talking about Stetson Bennett (Daniels' replacement) having a stronger arm and being more mobile. For those who rate Daniels' near the top of their draft boards, I ask you, what makes him your number one guy? Right now, Daniels is barely staying in the top 10, but if he continues to not play, for whatever reason, it'll be hard to keep him here. Daniels is one of a few quarterbacks who's draft stock is not getting any favors from the football gods.
